What Kind of Touchscreen is Suitable for Semi-outdoor use?

2026-01-13

First, we need to understand what semi-outdoor is. "Semi-outdoor" is a concept between indoor and fully outdoor, typically referring to environments with roofs or eaves providing shelter but open sides, or environments with strong sunlight but no direct rain or snow, such as bus stops, sunshade-covered outdoor billboards, and information kiosks in semi-open corridors.

The key to choosing a semi-outdoor touchscreen is balancing performance and cost: protection requirements can be slightly lower than for fully outdoor use, but higher than for indoor use.

We can select a suitable touchscreen for our project based on several factors, including brightness, protection rating, and touch type.

    1. Brightness.

For outdoor or semi-outdoor environments, display brightness is particularly important. Compared to the lower brightness requirements for indoor use, outdoor or semi-outdoor environments generally require 500-1000 lux brightness. Based on the ambient light in a semi-outdoor environment, 500/700 lux is a good choice, but ideally, 1000 lux is preferable.

We all know that anti-glare effectively reduces ambient light reflection and is a common feature in semi-outdoor devices. However, if anti-glare is included, a higher brightness is recommended. 1. Anti-glare does affect screen transmittance.

    2. Protection Rating.

The most common is IP65 protection for the front panel. Some products may require IP65 for the sides or the entire unit, but this significantly impacts cost, so it needs to be determined based on the specific needs of the project.

Temperature Adaptability. Regular outdoor or semi-outdoor applications require a wide temperature range of -20 to 70. Some special environments may have higher requirements.

    3. Touch Type.

Currently, Capacitive Touchscreens are the mainstream, mainly due to their good response and support for multi-touch. In some special scenarios where gloves are required and there may be minor water or oil stains, resistive touchscreens may be more reliable.

Furthermore, different application environments will have different requirements for the casing material (aluminum alloy or stainless steel) and the type of touchscreen glass (explosion-proof screen, etc.).

In summary, clearly defining the core usage environment and operational requirements of the project, and weighing factors from the three dimensions of brightness, protection level, and touch method, is key to selecting a suitable semi-outdoor touchscreen and ensuring its long-term stable and efficient operation.
