But a growing number of applications — outdoor kiosks, access gates, industrial production floors, food processing lines, and medical equipment — expose scanning hardware to moisture, dust, and harsh chemicals that will destroy a standard module within weeks.

This article explains the IP (Ingress Protection) rating system as it applies to Scanner Modules, and walks through five real-world scenarios where IP65 protection (or higher) is not optional — it is essential.

Understanding IP Ratings for Scanner Modules

The IP rating system (IEC 60529) uses two digits. The first digit (0–6) rates protection against solid particles, including dust. A rating of 6 means the device is fully dust-tight. The second digit (0–9K) rates protection against liquids. A rating of 5 means the device withstands water jets from any direction.

IP65: fully dust-tight, protected against low-pressure water jets. This is the standard minimum for outdoor and industrial scanner installations.

IP67/IP68: additionally protected against temporary or prolonged immersion — required for underwater or wash-down environments.

5 Scenarios Requiring IP65 or Higher

Scenario 1: Outdoor Turnstiles and Access Gates

Turnstiles at stadiums, transit stations, and industrial facility entrances are exposed to rain, dust, and temperature extremes year-round. A standard scanner module will corrode or fail within months. Cement plants, mining facilities, woodworking shops, and bulk material handling warehouses generate airborne particulates that clog standard optical modules and degrade image sensors. IP6X (fully dust-tight) is the minimum for these environments, regardless of moisture exposure.

Scenario 5: Medical and Pharmaceutical Equipment

Medical device housings are frequently wiped with isopropyl alcohol and disinfectant sprays. While these environments are not typically wet, the IP54 or IP65 rating ensures that occasional liquid contact (spray, spill) does not penetrate the module and cause failure or contamination.
